In a climate where our fundamental human rights are increasingly being taken away and our stories are being erased, The Red Shoes in all its unashamed glory is a tale of reclamation that needs to be told and shared.
For the orphan boy in The Red Shoes, his attraction to a pair of red shoes encapsulates his desire to “dance a different dance”. It offers him a glimpse into how wonderful his life could be - a celebratory world of self – if only he was allowed to be true to himself.
Originally commissioned and first produced at the NIDA Reg Grundy Studio by the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sydney Australia, 25 March 2026.
